Panther has proved to do the exact same thing the last 3 installs of OS X have done on my Digital Audio DP533... random icon shootings. Every time I try to move an icon... it shoots across the desktop.. out of control. If it's not too careful, it might even kill one of my fish in the desktop screensaver background. Naturally,
I don't want to come home to all my fish... dead, floating at the menu bar, so I'm hoping somebody knows how to fix this. Also, all the icons are spaced rather far apart... it would be nice to have them bunched a little closer together, but I don't know how to get them to bunch together. FALL IN LINE DAMN YOU!!!! No not you... my icons.

Yeah, OS X is doing the same thing for me. What I ended up doing was going into the Finder's View Options and unchecking "Snap to Grid". It puts organizing your icons more in your hands but at least they're not shooting all over the place, you can put the icons as close together as you'd like, and no dead fish!

Yeah, I did the same thing, but I'm kind of anal, and would like to see this function work. Plus my fish told me they didn't like it either... something about "bad programing". I won't go into details... these tropical fish can be kind of rude. I'm thinking about adding a lobster to keep them more in check.

I think if its on snap to grid you can over-ride its dumber placements and manually move just the icons you want by holding down command (? or control os something) and then releasing the mouse. This way you can leave snap to grid on so the fish are happy and still get you icons lined up like soldiers so you are happy.
