, open FontBook in the Applications folder and verify that fonts are installed. If not sure, click the Disable button, which changes to Enable and the font is grayed out with the word "Off" to its right. Then click Enable to convince yourself that the font is loaded.
Because you said you're upgrading from OS 9, the fonts in 9 will still be in the System Folder where Classic lives, and the OS X fonts, some with the same name, will be in the System folder which (note the small f because the title is just System) houses OS X.
FontBook may report this as a duplicate font, but you do not have to do anything about this type of duplication, as far as I know.
