I am running Panther connected to a DSL modem through a Netgear router. When I try to make changes to OS X's built in firewall, I get a message saying that the firewall is not available because I have other firewall SOFTWARE running on my computer. I know the router has a firewall but I am not sure if its a hardware or software firewall. In any case, I didn't install any software firewall on this Mac.
I am trying to set up Timbuktu 7.0 to control this Mac remotely and I believe I need to get in to the firewall to open port 407.
If anyone can steer me in the right direction with this I'd appreciate it.

Alex

doesn't v7.0 add the feature to allow you to change the port? i thought i read that in the list of new features.

I have read that Panther's firewall sometimes misinterprets a setting from Jag as another firewall and gives this false message. The following command: "sudo ipfw flush" resets the firewall and supposedly clears this (you'd then want to reset your Firewall settings from the GUI.)

Note that in order to use Timbuktu from outside your local LAN, you're also going to need to set up port forwarding through the NAT in your NetGear router (or make your Mac a DMZ.)

You'll also get this message if you run a script to prevent an app, for example, from seeing other installed copies of itself on a LAN. Like MS Office, again, just as an example...
