I've had this problem as long as I can remember in OS X. In cocoa applications, when you have windows open and you're regularly manipulating them (typing in text fields, pressing buttons, dragging window, etc), after awhile, the whole window gets really sluggish. Dragging is slow and jerky, text fields lag, buttons are slow to respond when pressed. Closing the window and opening it again brings it back to normal. This does not seem to occur in carbon applications, but happens in all cocoa apps.

That's nice to know. Unfortunately, it doesn't help me in the slightest.

i've noticed that with iChat in 10.2 and 10.3... it seems the buddy list becomes painfully slow at scrolling after being open for a day or so, it gets slower and slower until i quit the app and open it again.

You've had it with WHICH versions of OS X ?
With which applications is it most marked.
What you describe reminds me of an experience I've had only with SAFARI. I finally noticed that it was a matter of tabbing to text fields where Safari was searching for all my previous fields of same name... and preparing to autofill. By turning OFF autofill (except for id/password), that performance drag disappeared. In Safari that drag was usually associated with spinning beachball.
Most applications don't have that sort of involved autofill (tho some sys apps like Mail certainly do).
Is that anything like the slow-down you get (admittedly the auto-fill problem was NOT fixed by a window re-open)? Giving us a list of carbon apps you're experiencing that with might be helpful.

I would look at your fonts, and see if possibly one of them is corrupt. Strange things happen with a bad font.
Have you installed any 3rd party haxies, like APE (Application Enhancer) ? What version of OS X are you using? During the last OS update did you do an archive and install or just an upgrade?

OK, just to clarify, this occurs only with cocoa applications. This occurs to the same severity in all cocoa apps. This has been going on as long as I can remember, (at least through 10.2 and 10.3). I do have Application Enhancer installed, but disabling it did not fix the problem.

Try removing the following files:
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices.UserCache.csstore (where ~ is your Home directory)
/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices.LocalCache.csstore
and reboot your machine.
You may need to reset your default email client and browser once you reboot.
This resolved some Cocoa only issues I had a while ago.

Sadly, removing these files had no effect.
