As I'm going for clean re-install in a few hours... why should or should I not use the "unix HD format"?

I'm not sure if this is the right forum
But anyway...

When I installed linux it sort of a by default made many partitions. Does that make sense for Mac OS X? Or should I go for simple 2 partition: system and data... or...?

Use HFS+. If you choose UFS, some things won't work.

This article says it's only applicable to 10.2.8 and earlier, but I'd assume some of the considerations apply to 10.3 as well.

At one point I was switching between using GNU/Linux and OS X on my PowerBook. I found that Linux couldn't read my thumbdrive after I'd formatted it UFS under OS X. Also, OS X wouldn't read it after I'd formatted it UFS under Linux.

Yes, weird, I know. Never found a solution. I'm not investigating the issue any further as I've gone completely OS X as of late (for now anyway).

Just from that experience alone, Vegan, I'd say don't use Apple's UFS.

By the way, most GNU/Linux distros these days use ext3 (journaled version of ext2) as the default file system format.
