Finder quits when drag-selecting on desktop

This is weird. If I have files on my desktop and I shift or command-click to select them, I can then move them etc without problem. If I draw a box round them to select them, when I then click on one to move them the finder quits. Anyone else having this problem? I'm on 10.3.1.

 iMac Core 2 Duo 17" 2ghz 3gb/250gb ||  iBook G4 12" 1.33ghz 1gb/40gb
