I'm a bit confused by Fink. I installed it, X11, and installed the panther developer tools. ran the update-all command and it spend a good hour or more to get all the packages needed (from what I could tell anyway), compiled it and reported back that it was done. now, is there a way to create a sort of emulated in a window KDE environment to run things? how does that work? or is Fink just a way to allow strictly Unix/Linux based/created apps to be run on a Mac or os x? If I can run something like blackbox on my Mac, how would I go about doing that? I'd like to use the CLI rather than fink commander, but if that'd be easier to explain I'd appreciate any help regarding that.
Thanks

if you're interested in a particular package, such as kde or blackbox, then you have to see if fink has a listing for it. fink basically acts like a package manager -- you tell it to install some package and then it will either download a binary and set it up or download the source, compile and set it up (as it did under your update-all command).

so: run "fink list", see if kde or blackbox is on there (yes), then install with "fink install PACKAGENAME" with PACKAGENAME replaced as appropriate.

I think it just seems too easy. I've been reading various fink faqs and Sao's how-to site on fink and i think i'm confusing myself and making it harder than it has to be...thanks for the help

KDE can be tricky to set up. Read the FAQ in fink's website carefully. BUT once running its awesome (I use icewm myself but I used kde as well).

yikes, i think you're right. what do i do to get kde running, there are tons of kde listings, but no simple "kde" to d/l. i tried kdebase3 but it started asking me about a ton of dependancy questions. what did i do wrong?

ok, and I now have blackbox-rootless on my system, but don't know what to do from there. I tried looking for man pages on it, but all it returned was a short three command description of how to find the version and help which didn't work as advertised. did i grab the wrong version? how does one get a blackbox environment running in os x?

iirc, you have to edit your .xinitrc to start blackbox at startup of X11. at least that's the way on XFree86, not sure about how to go about this on apple's own X11.app implementation...

Okay, first, to get started. read the FAQ:
http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/index.php

Now, to get kde working, follow these instructions:
http://fink.sourceforge.net/news/kde.php

To get blackbox working you have to have an .xinitrc, which is described in the FAQ but the command to put in there for blackbox is exex blackbox

Good luck!

Hmm, yeah, well I installed the X11user.pkg from my panther disc 3. I tried editing my xinitrc file to add "exec blackbox" to the end of it which I thought I had to do according to Sao's site, but what would that even do? Do I have to go to Applications/utilities/X11 to have that take effect? If so, nothing happens when I launch X11. when I type "blackbox" in a terminal window it says;
BaseDisplay::BaseDisplay: connection to X server failed.
by that i'm guessing it means my xwindows is not working properly? shouldn't quartz-wm be handling my window management? or, do i need something else in addition to a window manager? and, wouldn't X11 be that other thing? yeah, i'm confused huh?
thanks for all the replies and help. i'm having trouble grasping the inner workings of all this...
