A real newbie question from a new switcher.
So I've got a copy of Britannica that requires the silly DVD to be in the drive to access all the photos and cool stuff. Even though I've copied the complete DVD to the hard drive and installed the program successfully whenever I try to activate Britannica's advanced (?) features the program says insert the DVD.
How can I trick the program into thinking the copy of the DVD on the hard drive is the real DVD?

you might have to make a disk image of the DVD, and then mount it when you want to use the app.

Cheers.
Is that done by clicking on the new image icon on the disk utility program?

No, go to menu "Images -> New -> New image from (device)". Then you get a disk image that should work properly.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I must be stupid. I've tried half a dozen times to burn this DVD to my hard drive so that I can access it when I remove the original from the drive.
I just can't get it to burn the DVD data and image on to my desk top.
Can some kind soul out there please use small words for this bear of small brain and tell me what to do I after I put this silly Britannica disk in the drive?

Insert the DVD.
Open Disk Utility.
Go to menu "Images -> New -> New image from (device)".

PS: Just to clarify the terms: "Burning" is making a new DVD or CD from a blank disk. What you're trying to do is "rip" or "copy" the DVD to your hard drive.

(Sheepish grin) Ahh, . . . right. Ripping that's what I want to do. Thanks for setting me straight and your advice above. I'll give it another whirl . . .

Wonderful!
Sometimes disk images won't fool the program, and they require the original disk to be inserted anyway.
Looks like you got lucky.

Hmmm lucky, I guess so. Lucky in finding MacNN and people read to help others so quickly.
Pity Britannica is so crappy . . .
