okay, well i never saw this before...
running 10.3.2 on a powerbook.
amongst the startup texts, this:
"waiting for Be alert on applications which phone home"
unusual? or just something i've missed...
and what does it mean?
anyone?

"At first, there was Nothing. Then Nothing inverted itself and became Something.
And that is what you all are: inverted Nothings...with potential" (Sun Ra)

Check your /Library/StartupItems as well as your /System/Library/StartupItems to make sure nothing's been added that shouldn't be there.

That sure sounds like littleSnitch. It seems to be running something on boot to check to see if any other applications are the cause of some outgoing internet traffic.

I had a look myself at Little Snitch, and I found this:
Code:
Last login: Fri Dec 19 11:36:24 on console
Welcome to Darwin!
228:~ CharlesS$ grep -i -r 'be alert' /Library/StartupItems/LittleSnitch/
/Library/StartupItems/LittleSnitch/StartupParameters.plist: <string>Be alert on applications which phone home</string>
228:~ CharlesS$
Guess that answers that question. Mystery solved!

thanx!
well, it's a cool message, worth keeping littlesnitch for (as well as the real purpose of the app, of course)
