I thought Panther might be different, but alas no.

Fire hung, then the Dock, then the Force Quit dialogue and then the Finder leaving me with no means of escape. How crappy..

That's not a crash... it's just a lockup really... At least I don't consider it a crash the same way a Kernel Panic is.

Yeah that's a bitch. Computers suck, that's for sure. My Panther has yet to do anything nasty whatsoever. Oh, except iPhoto is really a lot more sluggish than it was under Jaguar.

I got a kernel panic a day or two ago.
Trainiable is to cat as ability to live without food is to human.

I can deal with a Kernel Panic (as these happen to be caused by something tangible), but a major lock up such as the one I had is soooooo frustrating as I know that if I'd had some way to get to the Terminal I could have resolved it.

Makes a good argument for putting Terminal.app in your Startup Items list.

Well I nearly got it open through my web browser, but made the mistake of using File->Open instead of just typing the path - resulting in yet another lock up.

This makes no sense to me! Either one is frustrating. What is so tangible about a KP vs a freeze?

Sometimes these strange lockups go away after quite some time. My iMac (with Panther) had the same problem a few days ago, but I hadn't saved my work and was going to wait for my girlfriend, so that we could ssh to my machine from her iBook. After 10-15 minutes, the computer suddenly worked again and only one application "had unexpectedly quit".
