I've read in a few places that InDesign now uses the typesetting algorithms of LaTeX to arrange its letters, although I'm not exactly sure how deep this goes as I don't use InDesign.

I currently use LyX/LaTeX as my default word/document processor given the ease with which I can get a very pleasing output (in English), but I am interested in InDesign as LaTeX makes the going difficult with regards to font usage, specifically the use of non bit-mapped Russian fonts.

On the other hand, I understand that LaTeX has the advantage of letting one control the structure of the document much more finely than InDesign.

If anyone with broader experience could comment on the pros and cons of the two programs or tell me something about InDesign's implementation of the LaTeX algorithms, I'd be very grateful.

Have you asked this question on the LyX mailing list? (http://www.lyx.org/internet/mailing.php3)
which is very active.

I have been using LyX for about 5 years now and I find that it works fine for all my, usually technical, documents.

While I have never used InDesign and probably never will... I would imagine that even if it does as you say and uses some LaTeX/TeX logic internally, since it is closed source there is probably no way to determin how well and how much it uses the logic. I suppose you could ask Adobe.
