This problem has been going on since 10.1.?
When using dial-up on both my 700 MHz G4 iMac and my 867 MHz 12" PowerBook G4, the MenuBar "disconnecting" animation starts, I can no longer do anything online... And the only cure is a reboot. Even logging out or switching users does nothing to relieve the situation.
In the past, disabling Error Correction in the Internet Connect application solved the problem, but took my dial-up speed from 48000 or 49500 down to something in the 28K range. Unacceptable!
I have adequate RAM on both machines and usually the only apps open are Palm Desktop, Mail (finally switched from Entourage) and Safari. This happens about once a day, but not in every Internet session. And it's happened with both NO applications open and with more than those stated above. I think it's OS X-related, not third-party software specific.
It's also happened whether or not I have the "dialing" animation activated in the MenuBar.
Has anyone solved this or seen it solved? A quick search at Apple has turned up nothing. Neither has filing various bug reports with them.
There's nothing more embarrassing than having this happen in front of my brother or brothers-in-law... After being all pro-Apple in front of them. They're not rebooting their Windows XP machines as much as I'm rebooting both my desktop AND my laptop.
Help, please.

Look for 'end hanging disconnect' on versiontracker. It works great

My girlfriend's Lombard has been doing this very thing for a while now. I'll have her try the End Hanging Disconnect program when she gets home tonight.
I'm wondering as to the cause of the problem. Her modem line has a lot of static on it and at times will cause her connection to drop. She'll go from a 48000bps connection to disconnected at random intervals. At first I was worried it was the modem in her Lombard going bad but I'm starting to suspect that the static is the problem. PPP is pretty error tolerant but it needs to know a connection has been dropped when you disconnect. I suspect that when there's static on the line the PPP control messages get borked up and PPP hangs waiting for the disconnect signal. I think the problem is exacerbated on her Lombard because it isn't the fastest Mac around. When I've used dial-up at her house my 12" AlBook got stuck trying to disconnect but didn't lock up entirely.
