Hey everyone, I'm very new to the mac community (less than 24hrs) and i had a few questions...

1.Every time i download something (game, app) i'm getting a white "disk" on my desktop that i can't get rid of without ditching the app, what is that and is there anything i can do?

2.can i change the icons of folders or apps?

3.is it safe to leave my iBook on all night sleeping or should i turn it off?

4.Customization of my desktop? can i and how.

sorry for the dumb questions but i'm very new and trying to get the feel for this new OS.

THANKS!

Welcome!

1.) That white disk is called a disk image. Kind of like a "virtual" disk. Just drag the application to wherever you want to keep it. Then, eject the disk image.

2.) Yep. Head on over to xicons.com for icons. There's also a help page there that'll show you how to change them.

3.) Leave it sleeping! There's minimal power draw, and you're back at work in much less time than if you shut down.

4.) Right-click (or control-click) on an empty area of the desktop. Choose "Change Desktop Background...".

Hello and Welcome to the Mac Community

For your future considerations ..

Troubleshooting ...

Apple Panther Support

Common Panther Problems

Regular Maintenance ...

Macaroni ... just set it and forget it.
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9633

Macaroni is a tool which handles regular maintenance for Mac OS X's Unix core. Normally these tasks run on a regular schedule, in the middle of the night. However if you don't leave your Mac on all night, they never run. Your Mac won't wake from sleep to handle this. Macaroni solves this problem. If a scheduled maintenance task is not run when it's normally scheduled, Macaroni automatically ensures that it's run at the next opportunity, whenever the Mac is on. Repairs permissions also, on a weekly basis.

Good Luck!
