Hi,

I'm running 10.3.2 and have suddenly found that I can't create a new user of any description.

I'm baffled!

Any ideas?

What happens when you try to create the new user? I am assuming you are an administrator of the Mac.

I am the admin for the computer.

When I go to create a new user I click the '+' at the bottom left and fill out the details in the column on the right but they don't seem to take effect. If I click on to an existing user the new user disappears. For a while there is a new icon for the user but it vanishes. If I then quit system prefs and then go back in, there are only the three exising users: Myself as admin, one as a managed account and one as a standard account.

I can't even make an existing account an admin account. I tick the box but when I return to it having clicked elsewhere or quit system prefs, the box becomes un-ticked again.

It's very weird... I basically cannot change anything to do with the user accounts on the box.

Do you think NetInfo is broken somehow?

I have repaired permissions and run DiskWarrior.

Presumably permissions are screwed somehow.

Can anyone help me fix them? I have run 'Repair premissions'...

I would start by checking the Users folder for the correct permissions manually using Get Info.
They should be like this

Permissions on the Users folder seem to be correct. I assume I shouldn't hit, 'apply to enclosed folders'...?

What bothers me is that the log seems to have me down as an unknown user.

No, you don't want to apply to the enclosed folders.
In the NetInfo Manager, does your account show in Users? If yours was the first account created it should have a uid and gid of 501

I have a uid of 501 but a gid of 20.

Should I change the gid?

Root has a uid and gid of 0. I tried logging in as root and attempting to change the users but had the same problems exactly.
