OK, I think I'm just stupid, but I really can't find out how to do this:

I want a keyboard equivelent to switch from one window to another within a single app in Panther running on my 12" rev b PowerBook.

In Jaguar there was cmd-~ (or on non-US keyboards cmd-<) and this is also what Panther's MacHelp claims should work, but I can't get this to work on my PB. I've tried the Finder, Safari and Mail (so I got Carbon and Cocoa apps) and not one of the apps reacted to the key combo.

I have absolutely no clue what I'm doing wrong. Any ideas?

Have you installed any haxies?
Are you running any software to modify the keyboard behavior (like the F-keys)?

That's where I'd start looking. If you have any of those, remove them and try again.

If you have more than one account on your machine, see if it works in any of the accounts. That will help you narrow down the problem to a single account, or the entire machine.

Thanks for the tips. I don't have any hacks or key-modifier utilities, but I do have a European keyboard (try ordering a PowerBook in Europe with a US keyboard... but that's another story). Maybe the non-US keyboard is the problem. cmd-~on my keyboard would be cmd-opt-n, but that doesn't work. Under Jaguar there used to be a work-around: cmd-< but that's not working either.

It's also not working on other accounts or a new generic account. And since the system is pretty fresh and I haven't screwed with it I really think it's something else...

It's the darndest thing, but on my other Panther machine it's really working.

If I go to my PB's keyboard system prefs and select the shortcuts panel it even says that cmd-< "rotates" windows. Still, it doesn't really do anything when I press cmd-<. I then pressed the "restore defaults" button and it still said cmd-< rotates. But it had no effect at all.

Could this be a screwed pref file? Does anybody know what the name of this file and its path is? Or is there some cache file that should be deleted too?

This is rather weird!

I don't know how to help. Nor do I know the layout of the non-US keyboards. But in the US it's the key just to left of the number 1.

YES!

I am an idiot.

The solution is really simple.

I have a stupid little app called Equation Service which is a GUI front-end to get little PDF snippets with LaTeX equations. Well, this little app puts itself into the services menu and has a menu entry with the key equivelent cmd-<. But since this menu entry was greyed out pressing the key combo had no effect at all.

I'm going to try to modify the key equivelent in the app's plist file and if that won't work I'll delete it.

Once again, this is a good example why Apple should give us some control over the services menu and its entries...
