I often transfer large files between my Mac and PC. With Jaguar, transferring from PC to Mac was slower than the other way. But Panther takes it to a whole new level. Mac to PC speed is about what it was before, but PC to Mac has become insanely slow. It takes over an hour to transfer a 700MB file from the PC to the Mac. I can burn it to a CD and sneakernet it to the Mac in five minutes!

I got fed up today and downloaded an FTP program for the PC. Started Apache on the Mac and voila! 700MB took 1 minute. That's a hell of a difference. I read somewhere that the error-checking in SMB is what slows it down. During one transfer, I saw speeds initally pretty good, until about 50MB had been transferred, then suddenly it dropped to a snail's pace. Tried manually configuring the Ethernet port to 100 or 10baseT and full duplex, but it didn't help. Apple really screwed the pooch on this one.

Networking in general *sucks* in Panther. This is the worst OS I have ever used for networking.

See my comment in the "weird 10.3 networking thread" .

I just copied a 1GB movie from my PC to my Mac in under 2 minutes while streaming music and browsing the internet. Perhaps something is up with your PC settings, or Mac settings but an hour isn't normal. Never ever taken that long for me.

I have the exact same problem. It worked fine under jaguar, but under panther it is ungodly slow. When i'm on one of my pc's and browse to the mac and copy a file over it's horridly slow, the other way is fine though. If i however use ftp and transfer from the pc to the mac it's fine. So this indicates to me it's something with samba. I guess using a release candidate instead of a final release of samba wasn't the best call on apples part. I've been looking all over for an answer but so far nothing. The strange thing is, it doesn't seem to be everyone. Just for reference, i did a clean install of pather. I also messed with the 10/100/1000 settings as well as full and 1/2 duplex settings, no difference.
