Ok, here's my issue. I got a couple of AIX boxes that create "Job" folders with "dot" files in them. The AIX box can see my Xserve using NFS, but it will not allow me to send the "job" folders because OS X doesn't allow the creation of "dot" files. Is there a way in OS X 10.3 server version that I change this? Security isn't much of an issue, the server is a stand alone with very limited access.

You mean create them in the GUI, or create them at all? Certainly OSX does allow you to create files beginning with a period, just not in the GUI. I do it in the terminal all the time.

They are created on the AIX box and then I need to transfer them to the Xserve through a NFS connection. The problem is this gives me an error. OS X won't accept the files that start with a ".". I am hoping there is a way to make OS X accept these through NFS.

see if TinkerTool's 'show hidden and system files' option fixes this, it should allow 'dot' files to work normally.

Thanks, didn't think of that. It's worth a try. I stopped using Tinker Tool after Apple allowed moving the dock around.

I'd say the problem is with NFS, Apples implementation of NFS or the Finder app. OSX (as a system) does allow the creation of files beginning with a period eg ".file.txt" - try it in TextEdit. You'll get a warning: "If you decide to go ahead and use a name which begins with a dot the file will be hidden." but it does allow it.

On the other hand the Finder won't allow you to rename an file starting with a dot.

What is the error your AIX box gives you when it tries to put the dot files on your mac?
