hello!! i did search, and maybe i just can't think of the right search terms and if that is the case, i am sorry but here is my question...i am looking to install apple's x11 and if i read the site correctly, it should be on the install disks that came with my computer (just bought & shipped with panther) but i can't seem to find the installer to be able to use it. anyone had luck with this? or am i stuck with the long download to get it? thanks!!
also, what benefits are there to using this rather than terminal.app for working/learning the unix file system and apps? thank you for all the help. have a great day!!

i dunno about you, but it was one of the options on the main install screen when i installed Panther. boot from the disc and just select the X11 option. i don't see why that wouldn't work?

None that I know of, other than that you'll need it for most GUI apps that originated on other Unix systems

It's part of the install option
You also need to install the SDK from the 3rd CD

For basic UNIX app (ie ls, cp) that are commands, Terminal is fine
But for real apps (with an interface) you need X11
Then you will be able to use Emacs, Gimp, Latex and a lot of others available from fink (look on versiontracker.com for fink commander and fink)
It's a bit hard to start with X11 but once you got it, you can have a LOT of great apps

Explore what is available for X11 via fink. 2300 packages so far.
