Hey folks:

I'm not having any success compiling an open source project for OS X. I'm lost and really don't know what I'm doing. My understanding was that if you can compile a program successfully under OS X that it should run as a native OS X app.

The app I'm trying to compile isn't available via Macupdate or VersionTracker. I found it by multiple Google searches on the web. It's a program that allows Pilots to record and archive their time and experience. For me, it would be a backup to my paper copy (if you ever loose your paper copy, then you loose all evidence of any flight experience). With an electronic log for tracking the experience and flight time, I only need to copy a few pages from the hard copy for the specific endorsements.

I found a program that sounds like it will do the trick and reposted it on my web site at:

http://sheald.net/Download.html

I sure sould appreciate it if anyone could take a look at it to see if it can be compiled under OS X. The compressed file is only 72K in size.

Thanks in advance!

Well, by the look of it, it seems like this is a program that you can run in the terminal, but not as a native OSX app. If that's the case then you'll need the developer tools that come with the OS/your computer/free web download to be able to install it. So far I've just glanced at it, but I'll take a closer look it at it later and see if I can help you with it. But now I'm off to bed for the night so It'll be some time tomorrow. Maybe someone else here can give you some tips.

In short:

What you have there is a X11 application, it runs fine for me with Apple's X11 installed. You also need to install gtk/glib before you compile it.
Then unpack the archive, replace the config.sub and config.guess in the source folder with copies of /usr/share/libtool/config.sub and /usr/share/libtool/config.guess (note to the developer: use the tools on the machine if possible), run "./configure", "make", and "make install" and you're done (you might need to set the DISPLAY environment variable to :0.0 first if you run it from the Apple terminal).

Wow! Thanks for the quick replies.

I've got Xcode and X11 installed.

Moonray, where do I locate the gtk/glib file from to have it work?

Thanks all !!!

A popular way to install Unix stuff on Mac OS X is like unimaxium suggests using Fink. Others prefer Darwinports or compile all stuff themselves without aid.
At one point there have been easy to install OS X .pkg files for basic X11 libraries on the web but I can't locate them anymore at the moment. This would have been the easiest way for you, but so you have to pick one of the above.
