Hi there,

Future switcher here, probably going with a Powerbook 15" within the month.

I travel to multiple locations, some wired ethernet, some wireless, all with different settings (static IP's, Gateways, etc.).

On my current PC laptop I am able to switch all those settings with the click of a button (thanks to non-MS, preinstalled software called "Config Free").

Is there a similar feature built-in to OS X?

Thanks,

Mike

In a word, yes, MacOS X includes the ability to switch locations from a systemwide menu. Location settings includes all network related settings (static IP/DHCP/etc., DNS, wireless network and keys) as well as some network service settings (proxies, some forms of directory access, etc.).

This feature actually predates MacOS X, it's a carryover from the Classic MacOS.

You can setup multiple locations in the network prefs. Once you do you can use the Apple menu and choose location. then it will allow you to select the location you want. If the location is DHCP then you don't have to set a location just leave the selection at automatic. If there is a static at a location setup th info and setup a location for it then when you get to that location just switch to it and OS X will use those settings. I have 1 setup for my house and one is left at automatic so when i get to work or go to a place that is DHCP it works just by switching to it.

Thank you for your help.

Well, after monitoring Jobs' speech thru MacNN (couldn't get the QT stream) I decided that there wsa nothing keeping me from buying.

I purchased a 15" Powerbook with superdrive locally from CompUSA.

I was so happy when the setup/registration screens found my wifi router and was able to connect and register without difficulty.

I have found the Locations menu and set up some of my work settings and home settings. So far, everything is A-ok.

Watch for more newbie questions in this and othter MacNN forums, and thanks again!
