I have recently upgraded to Panther from Jaguar; and now when I ctrl+click, say, a folder or a removable volume, in the context menu there is are two entries called "Enable Folder Actions" and "Configure Folder Actions..."
What are they and what is their benefit?

Hmm. Guess I'll be non-elitist and answer your question.
Folder Actions are AppleScripts that you can attach to folders to do all kinds of stuff.
You can also find out more here.

Eh ? who was being elitist ? Apple's little 5 page intro is the most succinct, descriptive explanation out there ... all 3 of us linked him to the same pages, just in different ways.

Some forum-dwellers like to boost their Karma by interpreting the actions of others as elitist, fascist, zealous, etc. After all, if I state that you are being krusty, the implication is of course that I am not (and therefore of greater nobility). The reality in this case however is that you are Krusty, and I am not, but that is a moot point . . .

This is one aspect of Panther I don't understand either. Maybe it stems from the fact that I don't fully understand the whole AppleScript thing either?
I read that apple page, and still don't see the idea.
So I click on a folder let's say, in my home folder, like Documents, and I select configure folder actions, and this little window pops up, which I have no idea the purpose of. So I click on the Help in the menu bar for Folder Action Setup and I get a message saying "Help isn't available".
Hmmmmmm
Guess I was not meant for this stuff. It upsets me because so much of the rest of OS X is so intuitive and obvious to me.

It's not a 10.3 feature, attaching scripts to folders has been around since Mac OS 8 or 8.5.
The most common use would be to automatically perform actions on files you put in a folder. That can be sorting them by name into other folders, converting them into something, having them opened, changing their name, anything. What is done is defined by an (apple-) script attached to the folder, and a script is a series of commands to be executed.

If you'd actually checked the links posted here, you might have understood it..
