Let me wiggle my nose and bring it back.....
Check if that worked....
Did you look in the trash?
Do a search on it?

Try relaunching the Finder. Command-Option-Escape, select the Finder, and click Relaunch.

The puff of smoke just signals that its reference (like an alias) is being removed from the dock. That's completely unrelated (as is the fact that you dragged the folder to the dock in the first place) to your trouble locating the folder.
Why not do a SEARCH in the Finder (Apple-F) for the name of the folder. You may have accidentally dropped it somewhere (whether trash or not) - or have it hidden behind another item on desktop.

After you dragged it onto the dock, what did you do with the "duplicate" original folder that was on your desktop? Did you delete it thinking it was "extra"?
