In my Panther there resides: /Applications/Utilities/Asia Text Extras/Chinese Text Converter.app.

I did a custom install and elected to not install "foreign" fonts and languages, but this folder still remains.

Since I foresee no need of it, is there any downside of trashing it as I would any other app, or is a great "gotcha" awaiting me as soon as I do?

I think it's safe to delete it. (I did without any problem.)

If you delete it, and it turns out you want it back someday, you can use Pacifist to extract it from the install packages.

</shameless plug>

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

if you're deleting things you never use and won't ever need, you might have a look at delocalizer. it frees up space by deleting applications' localizations.

I use Japanese and Chinese text input all the time, but I have no idea what those "extras" do. Go ahead and delete them.

Thanks all! I went ahead and deleted that folder. If there are any unforeseen consequences, for sure, I'll advise. But based on a first look, all is normal.

Much ado about nothing, or so it seems.

Thanks again.
