Hi there,

We're currently using a 1.8 Ghz G4 xServe here on campus. Came back the next day, and all I have is a pale blue backdrop with no login screren, as per usual. Mouse works, and all background apps are working fine (we still have eMail and internet). Can SSH, remote login, etc., but can't login manually.

Any ideas on how I might get the login screen back?

Thanks,
-Rob

...we're using a 1.25 Ghz G4 xServe. Not 1.8. Doubt that makes any difference.

Hey, n/m. Solved the problem. I unplugged all the drives, inserted the Panther CD, booted off of it, opened Disk Utility, plugged the drives back in, scanned for problems (none found), scanned and repair permissions (lots of invalid permissions for some reason), rebooted, and it boots just fine now.

Thanks to any potential helpers.

Hey -- glad you fixed your problem.

For future reference, you don't have to unplug your drives to boot from the CD, simply put in the CD and hold down the "C", turn the power on and keep holding down the "C" key until you hear the CD being read.

Another neat trick, is you can connect two machines via Firewire, and the one giving you trouble reboot and hold down the "T" key -- this initiates the Firewire Target Disk Mode and the hard drive will appear as on orange disk drive on the other machine. It works just like another drive and you can run the disk utilities on it.

Thanks for posting your solution!
