We have a G4 that's perfectly happy running 9.2. But the IT folks need it on the network so we're going to load 10.3x. I still need OS9 for some apps we use. And I'm going to back up the drive to a stack of CD's.
When we load Panther how will OS9 react?
Do we need to partition the drive? (If so, I'm assuming that wipes the drive?)
Is there anything in Apple's Kbase that covers this?
Anything else I need to be aware of?
Thanks again for any help.

If you are going to run OS9 regularly I would either install Panther on another partition or just add another hard drive for it. If they are on the same partition and you crash in 9, Disk First Aid will spend forever going through the hundreds of thousands of files OSX installs.
In order to partition, yes you would need to wipe the drive. You should be able to back everything up, do the partitioning, then copy it back. This would be easiest if you had an extra HD available. (if you need more specific info on that process, just ask.)
Your existing OS9 and Panther should co-exist just fine.

Ideally, it shouldn't. It should run more or less exactly as it did before.

You do not need to partition the hard drive, per se. Some users prefer to do so, because it makes the two filesystems a little cleaner. I do this, in fact. Whether or not you do it is up to you, however.
If you do decide to partition the hard drive, it will wipe the drive in the process, so backing up is a Very Good Idea.

Not that I am aware of, but the process is pretty straightforward.

Thanks for the info. Now it's off to deal with the IT folks.

By the way, OS 9 is generally pretty good at getting "on the network" and with add on tools such as Thursby's DAVE can be networked fairly easily with Windows systems.
OSX rocks however.
