Here at work we have a Maxtor 120gb FW400 hard drive still running on an Oxford 911 chipset.

This drive is visible fine under Panther, and copying is no issue.
However, whenever something tries to low level access the drive it crashes. For example starting Panther DiskUtil will crash the Disk Utility with a background process error.

I have tried to firmware update it, but update.jar crashes java when it tries to access the drive.
And the problem has been replicated across 4 Panther machines (eMac, PBG4, G5, G3).

Any hints?

I have the same problem with ZIP drives, seems like Panther has more bugs then Jag ever did.
