i am thinking about trying to put OS X on my upgraded powerbase. it has an old scsi cd drive that isnt supported by OS 9. its really a pain in the butt to get my old version of CD Rom Toolkit to work under 9 correctly. the way ive done it in the past was load 9 on the machine and use xpost facto to install MacOS X. i was wondering if there is anyway to install X(Panther) and skipping the 9 part all together? any ideas?

That sounds like too much headache and not enough payback. I would get a Panther compatible computer and go from there. Whatever OS is happy on the Powerbase should probably be the last OS it sees.

I own a Dual 2Ghz G5
the powerbase has a G3 upgrade in it. its currently just sitting in my office collecting dust. i just thought i could load panther on it and give it to my parents, use it as a server, or something.
ive had jaguar running on the machine before. it ran great...all things considered.
i just was wondering if there was anyway to do it without going through xpostfacto.

As Panther does not include many necessary drivers, you would not even be able to boot from the CD without XPostFacto.

That seems like way more touble than it's worth. just upgrade it to the highest version of 8 that it will run and give it to them.

And give it to your parents? Did they treat you THAT badly as a child?

lol.
no they didnt mistreat me. they just have a PC and id like them to have a mac in their house. i know its not the best machine in the world to try and convince them, but at least they would be using a mac and not a pc.

as i said i could just run it as a server or as a third mac (i also have a 1Ghz TiBook) in my house.

i dunno, maybe they can just be happy with the 1.25ghz AMD machine i built them out of spare parts i had laying around.
