I need to print out some 4000 pages (records) from my FileMaker database. It is currently taking 24s per page... or 11 hours!! The bottleneck seems to be spooling from the host computer via USB to the printer.
Why do I think that? On the Mac where I opened the database and printed, it generates a 164 page document in about 3 minutes... a bit over 1s per page. That transfers immediately to the Mac that is sharing its USB printers. So getting to the shared print spool is quick.
If I pull out the paper from the printer while its printing this job and leave it out for a while; then put the paper back in, the printer immediately starts spitting out documents at about 1 every 2s or so. Thus, the slowness is not the printer or a lack of printer memory.
Rather, the computer is only able to feed the printer about 2 pages a minute... 24-25 seconds per page. I can't imagine USB is really that slow... so I am thinking the shared spooling by OS X Print Center is the culprit.
Any ideas on how I might speed this up??
Thanks!

What kind of printer are you using? How many jobs are you sending at once? Is it a Postscript printer?

Is the printer on the network? If so, have you tried going direct instead of through sharing?

No, the printer is NOT directly on the network.
