Crap, I just did a "tar -cf *" inside a directory and it seems to have erased the first file in the directory, naming the tar the same thing, and then included all the other files in the tar.

I now see that I didn't run the command correctly, but did I just erase the file? Is there any way to recover it?

I did a unit last year in which over 20% of the students erased an important part of their final project by doing just that
The command line is not exactly forgiving.
