Check the permissions on the folder Classic is trying to use; it may not be able to write to the files that it wants.

Does it work to begin with? Are you running an OS 9 capable machine? If so, try booting from it. If you can't boot, that will likely give you a lot of information... i.e. It has nothing to do with Panther.

I had this SAME problem!!! With a Mirror door G4.

I reinstalled OSX and the problem went away!

Tried creating a new user - same problem
Tried installing a new os9 - didn't work
Tried installing on a new drive - didn't work

Applecare support suggested updating the firmware -- didn't work

It may be a pain, but I formatted the drive with the disk utility in osx and then installed as an archive-restore and everything just worked then.

Good luck!
