first off, i figured a search for this would turn up lots of good info, but i didn't find anything specific.
i have my finder prefs set to open new windows in column view, but it always opens them in icon view (maybe that's not what it's called - the view with the huge icons).
all other finder prefs and settings are fine and are being remembered fine. is this a known problem with 10.3.2, or is there something i'm missing?
thanks.

Here is an article that better explains the Finder. It goes back to when Apple wanted the finder to be part file viewer and part windows management system.
http://www.arstechnica.com/reviews/0...sx-10.3-9.html
The problem is no one can figure out which window will view as what. even when you set the columns the way you want them, a restart or boot to 9 will change everything.

This has been happening since 10.0, were just used to it, Apple has not fixed this since 10.0 so I would get used to it.

Works fine for me. If I set the Finder to open new windows in column view that is what I get.
Try creating a new user and see if it works there. Maybe your prefs are messed up.
Also someone gave me this to run at the root of the drive in terminal
sudo find . -name .DS_Store -print -exec chmod 777 {} \;
Fixes the problem of windows not remembering their views.

my windows are all remembering their views, it's just that new ones that haven't been configured aren't opening in column view like they should.
my perms are ok, i just reinstalled 10.3.2 over the weekend and i've dug through the system thoroughly. thanks for the tip though, i'll dig around again and see what there is to see.
as an aside, i don't think you should have to make your .DS_Store world rwx for it to remember your prefs....and if you do that's pretty messed up.

Probably not, but the fix seems to work 100% of the time with every machine that I have used it on and I can't imagine any kind of risk setting them all to rwx rwx rwx so if it works then why not.

the risk is that any other user on the system can
1) rm -fr any of your .DS_Stores (if your directories aren't all well protected)
2) edit your .DS_Stores so that the next time you open a certain window, malicious code is executed. (again, (if your directories aren't all well protected)
i don't have any examples of #2, but i'd imagine it'd be very easy.
of course setting a file to rwx for all will 'fix' a permissions problem...in the same way that getting rid of your firewall will 'fix' those problems you have forwarding ports for file sharing and the like...

From Rob Griffiths "The Mac OS X Solutions Guidebook" < http://www.macosxhints.com/osxguide.php> try the following:
1. Close all open Finder windows,
2. Open a new Finder window. Set the size, position, view type
3. Close it.
All subsequent new windows should open with the settings you just specified.

yes, this works for individual folders, but not for all new folders.
by new i mean opening a folder i've never opened before.
i can open say, my applications with cmd-shft-a, set the prefs, close it, and then from that point on it works fine. however, if i say, unzip a file into a directory on my desktop, then open up that dir with the finder, instead of opening in columns it opens in icon.
