I suspect that the hard drive has some troubles... is there any unix tools to check the hard drive for bad blocks and such?

[Well, any ideas are welcomed actually].

I'm getting some strange I/O errors and comp freezing on me...

Applications --> Utilities --> Disk Utility

Run the "repair permissions" thing first.

Then reboot and run fsck.

AFAIK there is no simple comandline or GUI app to check for bad blocks for Mac OS X.
-DU-...etc...

That doesn't solve my problem.
This is being going on for about a month... I repair permissions and repair the disk with the install CD, but it still dies on me from time to time [sometimes several time a day].

What are the "strange I/O errors"?
What apps are running when it freezes?
Are you using any "unusual" configuration(s)? By "unusual" I mean Mac OS X seems to run fine as a stand alone workstation but when one starts to use networked filesystems such as Samba, NFS, or even Appletalk there can be strange freezes and behavior.
Have you run the hardware test disk that came with your Mac?
Have you tried swapping out memory modules?

I have found that *some* disk problems can be solved by saving all difficult to replace data, low-level formatting the drive (write all zeros to the disk) and then re-installing everything. Quite time consuming though. Depending on how you value your time it can be cheaper to just replace the disk and be done with it.
