Check your audio input selection in the Sound System Preferences, ensure it is set to external microphone.

What is the hardware you are using? Possibly the microphone or the Mac is bad. Do you have another way of testing the mic?

It's a G4 400Mhz...
The mic is brand new, don't have anything to test it on.
I wanted to use it in iChat.

If I recall correctly, the generation, of which your Mac is a member, was designed to work with PlainTalk mics. These had a slightly longer 1/8" plug and had a built-in pre-amp (the longer plug provided connectivity to the internal power feed in the Mic jack). Standard issue mics would require external amplification - a la the iMic. Or the mic could be toast - but if its new, I doubt thats the problem.

That could be the problem.
It felt like the plug did'nt fitt in the jack like it should.

Sooner or later they are destined to come!
On the other hand, why don't you try to get your hands on an apple plaintalk microphone on eBay or a local mac dealer, they should be easily available and inexpensive I guess. So you could spend the waiting time for your G5 talking to your friends via iChat.
