Does anyone here know how to kill a hung modem?

I frequently get what I think is a hung modem -- Internet Connect stuck on "Disconnecting" -- because my phone line is bad (I live in Egypt). The only solution to unjam it is to restart the computer.

Please let me know if you know a waty to restart the modem without restarting the entire computer.

Thanks.

not that this provides a solution to your problems, but i find that the same thing happens when my cell phone crashes while surfing through its gprs connection (via bluetooth, but that is incidental). i must restart, or else "disconnecting" hangs out in the menu bar forever.

I have this problem all the time. Search for "end hanging disconnect" on VersionTracker for an AppleScript that works like a charm (you may need to run the script twice, but otherwise it runs like a charm).

HI all -

I have the same problem on a dual 450 max running 10.3.2 with an Alcatel USB modem (I know, it's a horrible thing...)

The End Hanging Disconnect will work (after being run twice - odd!) but then I can't reconnect.

The only solution is a reboot which is driving me nuts as in all other respects 10.3.2 is rock solid.

Has anyone else had this issue? Any solutions appreciated.

Thanks

I experienced the same problem on my iBook 366. It happened when I pulled the USB plug for my ISDN modem before OS X finished disconnecting, and I had to restart to resolve the issue. So i just stopped pulling the plug

Only aftrewards did I read that this is a "common" problem and I also found out about the script to end that nuissance. AFAIK, it is working for most people. Check the comments on Versiontracker.

This is one of the biggest reasons I prefer external modems. If it hangs, you just unplug it.

It's really a shame that you can't find those around anymore. Between the on/off switch and the modem lights, it's surprising how much more useful they actually are.

According to veteran member proton posted 08-02-2003 11:55 AM, this command should terminate the modem:

sudo echo '+++ATH0Z' > /dev/cu.modem
