Hi all,

I have just upgraded to Panther and I thought that OS 9.2 was included with it (big mistake, I know); so now I need OS 9.2 to run QTVR and I am out of luck (when is Apple going to release a OS X native QTVR).

There only one partition on my hard-drive and that is taken up by OS X. I am afraid to install OS 9.2 (by booting from it's CD), because I don't know if I will lose data when initializing the drive for OS 9.2 installation.

Can someone please help out here as to how I can install OS 9.2 without losing any data that is already on my drive?

Thanks.

If you formatted the drive to include OS 9 drivers, you will not need to initialize it to install OS 9. I would, however, recommend telling the OS 9 installer to do a clean install. Otherwise, theoretically, it might see the OS X System Folder and try to install on top of it.

If you did not include the OS 9 drivers, you will definitely need to reinitialize your drive to install OS 9, as the drive will not show up in OS 9 otherwise.

Thanks for your quick response. And no I do not have the OS 9 drivers installed. If I do reinitialize the drive, will I lose any data?

Bummer... I guess if there is no other way, I will have to bite the bullet and do the reinitialize.

Note that with Panther, all reinitializations put OS 9 drivers on by default, and you can't select otherwise, so you shouldn't have this problem again.

Also, do you want to boot into OS 9, or just run Classic? You do not need to have the OS 9 drivers installed to install OS 9 for Classic -- the OS 9 drivers are only needed to boot a Mac in OS 9.

You shouldn't have to reformat your drive - there should be a copy of Classic in the Software Restore DVD that came with your G5. Do the following:

1. Insert the DVD.

2. Double-click the icon that shows up on the Desktop.

3. Type Command-Shift-G.

4. Type '.images' (without the quotes, but with the period in front). Hit Return on the keyboard.

5. There should be an image called OS9General or something like that in the folder that appears. I believe that disk image contains a working OS 9 system that you can copy to your hard drive and use for the Classic environment.

Oh, and one more step:

6. Go to the following web site and complain to Apple about not including Classic in the default Panther installation. Disk 3 of the Panther install CD's has over 400 MB free, and it is way more than enough to have a package that would install a minimal Classic system.
