Trash a preference file ------ Reformat the hard drive, reinstall the OS from scratch, load all your data from backup, and spend 2 weeks hunting down the install CD's and download locations for all your apps so you can get your system back to a semblance of what it was

My friends PC didn't come with install CDs, so when his system freaked out... there was nothing he could do. This is a brand new computer...

He doesn't have to worry anymore... I sold my iMac to him. He's all set now.

Macintosh HD > My Computer isn't a good comparison.
My Computer is more like the Finder on a Mac. Macintosh HD is like a default name for the "C drive."

i hear people say 'x out' all the time, in reference to clicking the 'x' button (yes, the close button).

however, i have never heard "bring up".

We say "X out" all the time at work, ie "X out of that window."

As far as opening up apps, there isn't really a common phrase. I hear "start up", "launch", "open up" more often than anything else.

'bring up' is commonly used in tech support. At least when I did tech support. Though we always said close or exit out index of x out, though I have also heard x out.

Restart -------- Reboot
Restart -------- Restart

From Windows XP shutdown panel "What do you want the computer to do?

Restart

Ends your session, shuts down Windows, and starts Windows again."

Reboot just seems to be a general term people use on either side.

There is:

Sleep ------ Stand by

And

? ------ Hibernate

car1son: just a note, both Ethernet Addresses and AirportID are types of MAC addresses. Apple differentiates them because many of their customers will have both. Windows doesn't because they don't provide 802.11 devices to most of their customers, and so let the other drivers handle that.

Actually, "Macintosh HD" is closer to "C drive." And "My Computer" is equivalent to…whatever your computer name is.

Recycle bin is technically a better name because you are actually taking the data that you want to erase and when you empty the trash, the data is being recycled back into the hard drive as neutral 0s and 1s. Data is never actually "deleted" or "trashed". Maybe I didn't explain myself well enough.

I always hear people refer to their computer as their 'hard drive' or 'modem'.

When I worked in tech support for an ISP, I would often ask people to bring their computers in for us to look at. And they would ask, "do I need to bring just the hard drive?" And I would sometimes say, "No, I need you to bring the whole computer, don't take out the hard drive."

Also, they often refer installing as downloading. I can't tell you how many times I've "downloaded the Windows 97 program" onto someone's computer.

From a very literal sense, that's exactly what happens. But I'd argue that the 'Trash' metaphor is a much more direct, and clear, interpretation of what someone wants to do with a particular app/document.

You're absolutely right, but in the end we could argue all day about what is more direct, makes more sense, was first, etc. yada...

Fact is, there was a Trash. It was offered on Mac desktops built buy Apple. Many others wanted to make use of the idea, but they didn't want to ask or pay Apple for their intellectual property. Therefore, they just stole it and to make sure the lawyers and courts didn't give them the chopper they used some ridiculous name that should hide the origin of their theft.

So, call it what you want, if it's not a Trash, it's a cheap (and illegitimate) copy of the Trash. Of course it might work just as good, but it's still theft.

So, the rant's over. Now I feel better.

Macintosh Finder ----- Windows Explorer

---- I guess "Windows Seeker" or "Windows Searcher" was just too ironic - after all, no one seeks after Windows, it's forced on them.

Macintosh HD = C:
(not My Computer)
although the actual name is user configurable

Go -> Computer = My Computer
(ie, in the Finder's "Go" menu, or any Finder window with the side bar open)

Not strictly true. The part of the hard disk where the data was stored may be recycled, but the data itself is NOT. The data is deleted (or more like is put on the side of the road to be picked up by the garbage truck - ie, it is deleted when it is overwritten).
