I have an external FW HD that I'm trying to set up access for for a friend who's FTPing in to my iBook. I've discovered that FTP doesn't play well with aliases, so I need to create symbolic links instead. I found a freeware app called SymbolicLinker that will reportedly make these links for me. But I'm curious about creating these links from the cli. Would it be somethine like:

ln -s Volumes\mp3 Users\friend\mp3

? I already have a new user set up for my friend to use for FTP; he's been able to FTP in just fine, but he hasn't been able to navigate to these mounted volumes.

I'm new to this stuff, so I'd love any suggestions on how I might implement this more elegantly. TVMIA.

Dunno anything about SymbolicLinker.

You command should be something more like:
Code:
sudo ln -s /Volumes/mp3 /Users/friend/mp3
Now... with FTP it might have put "friend" in a chroot jail and he may not be able to access any files outside of /Users/friend/. You may have to give him read permissions to /Volumes/mp3 in some config file. Not sure what config file that would be because I don't know what ftp server you are using (there seem to be several flavors of ftp server for Mac OS X).
-DU-...etc...

I've gone through already and given read/write permission to my friend for the volumes in question, so hopefully all will go smoothly after I create the symlinks. I'm just using whatever default FTP server ships with Panther (OSX 10.3).

Thank you for your reply.

I got the symlinks set up, and my friend can now FTP in to my music share. Problem is, he's getting an occasional error saying "folder does not exist," and there appear to be some folders he's seeing that I don't see on my end (he's using an XP box to browse my share). Thoughts on what might be happening here?
