I've the following problem. Selecting a number of documents/photos/mp3s etc, and then clicking the right mouse button to show the contextual menu is VERY SLOW.
For example, I just selected 20 mp3s in the finder, hit right-mouse-click so I could use 'open with....' and it took 20 seconds to display the contextual menu (beachball in the meantime).
Why is this so? An action like this in WinXP would only take a second.
Any ideas?
thanks.

What mouse/driver are you using? My MS Intellimouse (latest Intellipoint driver) recently had a similar problem, and I fixed it by trashing the prefs.

well, i just plugged my ms mouse in, and it worked... so I didn't install a driver..
but the same problem occurs when using the touchpad.
It's really a pain. If I highlight 100 photos, it can take ages....

What version of OS X are you using? I just tried selecting about 40 various documents on my old iMac 400 using Panther for reference, and the menu took absolutely no longer than with one document selected.
Two possibilities that occur to me right off the bat, though:
1. Do you have any contextual menu plugins installed that might be clogging up the works?
2. Have you tried right-clicking a second time? If the hard drive has spun down, the system might need to start it up before the menu can appear. In this case, the problem would only occur if you haven't right-clicked in a while.

Are you using panther? this behavior improved as soon as I up graded.
Check you don't have any 3rd party CMMs installed.

Well, from your comments, it sounds like I have a real problem... I'll check the menu plugin thing... but there's nothing I'm aware of.

Is it slow every time, or just the first time you right click and use Open with? OS X will scan all your drives looking for applications to place in the hierarchical menu, from then on, it is cached and should be instantaneous.
How much RAM do you have? Do you have external drives, a CD or DVD in an optical drive? A spun down drive can cause similar symptoms. My iPod causes that, as does a DVD in the drive.

It has always been slow, on any version of OSX. It's caused by the App icons in the "open with" menu item. And it pisses me off too.
It also happens from time to time if you do it on the desktop, the contextual menu's in OSX just plain suck.
