hi guys,

well, something very strange has happened to my 3-month old dual 2ghz g5. after isntalling yesterday's security and airport updates, i rebooted, did some more work, and went to sleep.

when i woke the computer from sleep this morning, i was greeted with my screensaver password window, and, a few seconds later, a kernel panic.

since then i have been unable to get the finder to work. the cause appears to be disk corruption; the machine will boot, but there will be NO "Starting services" screen (it goes from the apple logo, to the desktop picture) and nothing other than the dock. it appears that the SystemStarterResources.bundle is dead, or something of that like

now the question
before i do a clean install, i want to get some critical data off this machine. burning it to a dvd or a CD would be ideal, but i could also try to transfer as much as i can across the network.

how would you do this? the panther install disc works, but disk utility doesn't appear to be able to burn anything. worse, i can't get the network launched from single user mode (ifconfig en0 up returns no en0 device found)

any ideas? it doesn't appear that anything in the panther distribution lets you boot into some minimal system that has CD-burning capabilities; this would really do the trick.

thanks...
mike

If you do an Archive and Install instead of erasing the drive, you won't lose the data on the drive.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

perhaps, but where does the archive go? if the archive goes back on the same corrupt filesystem, then this is not a safe option. (nor is the install guaranteed to work).

archive and install is much like os 9's "clean install" - it creates a new system and makes a folder on your drive called "previous system..." - it leaves the user accounts and data within them alone.

yeah; this seems like it would be a risk. because, if the fs is corrupt, a fresh install will create new files. and this could mean it will write over blocks it thinks are free but are actually my critical files.

i don't know if this WILL happen, but i've seen it happen before (not just on the mac). it would be a great feature if the installer could "archive" my users folder to somewhere else -- eg, to a CD, DVD, network storage location; anything but the current filesystem.

most likely i am going to fix this by installing panther on another disk: i was going to try installing on my ipod, but that wouldn't leave me with enough space to do a disk-to-disk backup. will probably just throw another SATA drive in there, as soon as i can find one.

thanks..
