Especially when navigating to the Apple site but almost any site that has a query or redirect, the pages never load and or remain with many broken images.

When loading the same page with IE I have no problems so it's not hardware related.

I tried clearing the cache.

Should I trash the prefs? If so where are they stored for Safari.

Note: the problem existed before the latest security patch.

Hope that's enough info.
If a group of mimes are miming a forest and one falls down, does he make a sound?

you can try delete your preference file.

your home folder > library > preferences > com.apple.Safari.plist

delete that
