Auto join Airport went poof after Security Update

I have a TiBook 667 DVI with an airport card (10.3.2). Previously, whenever I woke my computer from sleep, it would automatically rejoin my wireless network (which is passworded). Since I installed the 1/26 security update, I have been unable to have it auto-join, even after checking Sys Prefs to make sure the appropriate choice was selected.

The only thing that made me *wonder* was that I have the feature turned on in the Security prefs panel that requires a password on wake from sleep.

I just want to open my Powerbook, type in my password and be on the network like I previously was. Any advice?

So,

This problem does not occur with another user account for me. Does it for you?

If not, this means that there is a corrupt file(s) in our home directories causing this problem. I did a search for and trashed airport and Internet Connect related prefs, but this didn't seem to help.

Seeing how I don't have time right now to screw around some more, I just set my Airport settings to join a specific network. This is a bit of a pain, but it'll have to do for now.

I am having similar problems with my PowerBook G4 12", but not my wife's iBook 500. It seems like there was something like a "connect to network when awaking from sleep" option, but I don't remember if this was in Jaguar or Panther (now using this) and I can't seem to find it. If I select my network from the menu, I get a connection error. I have to log out and log in again. Painful!

Why my wife's iBook doesn't do this too is beyond me.

I think I've solved the problem. Make sure that you've chosen to join a specific network by default. Go to System Preferences: Network. Then click to configure Airport. The pane will have the option, "By Default, Join:" Mine had formerly shown "Automatic." Choose "A Specific Network" instead and enter your user name and password. Remember, although the new Airport software itself can distinguish between hex passwords and ASCII passwords, the Network pane still does not. That means that in order to have your password work properly in this pane, you'll have to place a dollar sign ($) before you enter your WEP password. [EDIT] Sorry, I guess I missed the fact the previous poster already used this workaround. It seems logical to me that this is a purposeful design upgrade rather than a bug.

I'd still like to find out how to join a network automatically like I could before (my network is not secured with a password or anything like that, as I'm in a pretty remote location). It also seems weird to me that everything works as it should in another user account. Hmmm....

Any suggestions what files to re-create?

Well FWIW, switching to another account didn't fix the issue for me. The Airport update Apple just released allegedly addressed the issue, but Apple took it off Software Update for some reason. They may have found a bug related to the update, and if that's the case I appreciate the fact they aren't prematurely distributing it.

It's funny, mine started doing this when I installed a new, non-apple, router and started using WPA. I just assumed it was a security thing as a friend of mine with a powerbook connected to a WAP protected network has the same problem. Also, I can connect to my non-encrypted work network with no problems when I wake from sleep.

It was never on Software Update actually (AFAIK); however, you can still download the update at:

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...areupdate.html

No issues here at all with the update...

Maybe they did take it down and put it back up. Originally, when I attempted to install it, it gave me an error saying it couldn't be installed. So I DLd the package and tried. It froze after clicking "continue" everytime. So I deleted it and figured something fudged up and I would try later. I attempted to restart later in the day and I KPd (I assumed the update borked something up). Anyway, I tried again with SU and it worked. Of course, I don't have an AirPort station, and I'm not currently using the card, so I can't actually help with your problem. But the installation for me wasn't quite so smooth. I assumed someone screwed up and they would get a replacement fix on there.
