Believe it or not I think I finally found a virus. My ISP is VERY good about these things but this evening I found an email with a blank for the subject and from someone I dont know named "spidey2@aol.com" There was an attachment with a file named file.scr and was 24k in size. I opened it [it opened with graphic converter] and got a little fragment purporting to be the data fork of an unknown file format. Could this be the much feared MYDOOM virus that just snuck through. I have a LinkSys router and am huddled behind it, and behind the router I run HenWen - the mac osx version of the NIDS Snort. Could I have actually found a virus??? Oh My - so exciting!!!

I get this crap all the time. The best part about them is usually the sub-standard English trying to convince you to open them

the funny thing about this post is that drjoe claims to be a forensic pathologist in his profile.

That is probably MyDoom, or one of its cousins.

If you're on a Mac, then it cannot infect you; you are perfectly safe. But if you give the file to a Windows user and they actually run it, it could infect them.

Just delete the file as you would any other, and you'll be fine.

Er... why did you open the file? What if it had been the first ever MacOS X virus and you were the unlucky sucker who got it first? Well done! You could have just infected your machine.

Basic rule of thumb for any anti-virus activity that would probably stop or reduce more than half of the viruses and trojans in their tracks if people followed it - If you don't know who it's from, don't friggin' open it! Sheesh.

The myDoom virus is spreading rampantly. I admin a small email server for about 100 users, and while perusing the logs today, I parsed it and found over 500 infected files sent just by 11am today.
I am so glad I have a Mac that is not prone to this stuff. Oh, and thanks to declude virus protection on the Windows 2000 server as well.

I think all of you may have missed the posters point. I dont think he is scared he got a virus and is looking to see how to get rid of it. Rather I think he is excited at the prospect of finally seeing one of these mystical virii everyone gets. He sounded more curious than anything. I pictured him like poking it with a stick and saying, "Wow! this just may be one of them thar viruses I be hearin' bout!"

One of my favorite Onion headlines ever was

"Do not click me, you idiot" virus spreads like wildfire.

People just can't stand not clicking the damn things.

You know what, one day there really will be something like this. I just don't trust PC users.
