How do I clean up the desktop in Jaguar ?

During an episode of doing a couple of screensaves whilst running the itunes visualizer my folder and image icons that were once viewable in a self-organized comfortable way seemed to have travelled off the screen in a westerly direction.

I was looking around the finder for a way of restoring the desktop to its former appearance ?
Alternatively is there a way of hiding the desktops gathering icons but then instantly getting them back ?

I imagine that this will be repaired doing a restart , but in future I would like a simpie way of reformating the desktop, like a keyboard command !

Or maybe even an applescript ?

Did you try View->Clean in the Finder menu?
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

i cant tell u the exact steps since im not at my mac at the moment. but the finder's menus have the ability to "arrange" and "clean" up your desktop...or any window for that matter. you can do it anyway you want to. the view options also lets you set a "keep arranged by" option. there is also an option somewhere (cant remember where right off hand) to "hide/show" the desktop. that would effectively hide and show the icons.

You can also set it under view-show view options and just set it system wide or just for that folder.
