Can anyone shed some light on this. I have upgraded one of our office 1Ghz G4's (one with the wind tunnels). The installation seemed ok but on restart all the startup items quit unexpectedly on after another as does every other app including the system prefs. I went back and re installed again this time a new system and archiving the old (upgraded) one. The problem remains the same, disk utility does not help.

Having looked around the apple forums also, could this be a memory issue with Panther?

yep. could be.

You could try taking any non-stock memory out of the machine and seeing if it works...

Also, you could create a new user, (with no startup items active) to see if its somehow related to that stuff...

Here's what it was.
The machine was runnning a copy of Default Folder X which is massively oncompatable with Panther.
