I successfully used the following command

mount_smbfs -U userID -W WORKGROUP //winmachine.sombody.com/share /Volumes/MtdVol/

on the command line, executed as root. From the command line I can then go to /Volumes/MtdVol/ and see the files of the share.

What else has to happen before the mounted volume appears in the Finder as it would if I went through Go->Connect?

try:

disktool -r

to refresh the diskarbitrationd daemon. If that doesn't work, you have to enter it directly - something like:

disktool -a //winmachine.sombody.com/share MtdVol
