Ok, I just came across this.

I mounted 2 of the G4's partitions remotely using my iBook over airport.

I wanted to copy a 40MB file from one of the G4's disks to the other. If i were on the G4 this would have taken a matter of seconds, but because I initiated the copy on the iBook over airport, it is chugging along, taking 9 minutes.

Surely this shouldn't be happening.

[Edit]
In fact it seems (according to menumeters) that it is copying the file from volume 1 to my iBook then onto volume 2.

This is normal. If you don't want the files to travel over airport, you need to copy the file locally. You could do this by using Apple Remote Desktop, or using an ssh connection to your G4 from the iBook, and copy the files once logged on the G4. Or maybe enable Remote Apple Event on the G4, so that you can tell the Finder on the G4 to copy the file... but i'm not sure how to do it.
