Ok, I'm gonna upgrade a G3-466Mhz, 192 MB ram machine from OS9 to Panther for a friend of mine.

He wants to keep OS9, since he's still working with an old version of Protools.

Is there anything I have to be carefull with? Can I just run the Panther install and don't have to worry for the OS9 install? Any foreseen problems? Anything I have to make sure of?

Your friend will definitely need more ram to run Panther successfully.

Panther runs okay on my old iBook with 192 MB RAM. It is a little slow, but very usable. Certainly worth the benefits of OS X over OS X for the slight slow down in speed.

Having said that, if you've already got OS 9 installed, then the Panther installer should just run fine without causing any problems for the OS 9 installation.

Before running the installer, you should clean up your hard disk to make sure that everything is in either the System Folder or "Applications (Mac OS 9)" or "Documents". It's not essential, but it's a good opportunity to clean things up. By default you don't have any other directories at the root of your hard drive except the ones OS X creates ( /Library, /System, /Users, /Applications ).
