Hi everyone

I'm pretty new to the mac camp, and i have a question. Im hooked up to a cable modem, I have a p4 desktop, and an ibook g4. Both are coming off the router, blah blah blah.

My question is this. For the PC, i have found a reg tweak that increases download speed. It may be an mtu thing but im not sure. Anyway, my download speeds went from 120kbps, to about 300-500. Now my question is, are their any sort of tweaks like this for the mac?

Its kind of annoying downloading from the pc at such a great speed, and coming over to the ibook and getting about half the speed.

Any suggestions?

thanks in advance for all of you help

Many routers have MTU sizes/timings optimized for Windows by default. Some routers allow you to tweak the MTU settings, though in others its fixed.

Broadband Optimizer (linked above) is one utility to adjust the Mac's MTU settings to match the routers. There are a couple others as well.

You can also adjust settings in the kernel with sysctl in the Terminal. Try this:

Code:
sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.sendspace=131072 sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.recvspace=131072 sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0

BroadbandOptimizer is great. Works as advertised, and it's free (donationware). I'm getting speed increases ranging from 500 to 1000 kbps faster!

Why can't Apple implement this into the OS?

Yup, I also use Broadband Optimizer, and it works great here too.
