Press release:

http://www.rochester.edu/news/show.php?id=1684

I regret you inform you that the University of Rochester, in Rochester, NY has signed a deal with Napster to provide on-campus students with a legal music downloading solution.

It was a very bad decision made by Provost Phelps to act this way because over 30% of students living on campus use Macs. About the same percentage of PC users use iTunes as well. Napster is not cross-platform. Napster "techered-downloads" cannot be burned to CD or put on digital music players including the iPod. Tethered downloads expire as soon as a person is no longer a subsciber (i.e. during summer break). Students do not own their music.

After reading the following, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES DO YOU MENTION ME OR MY NAME OR POSITION in any communication with the Provost's Office. It will damage Apple's relationship with the University. Now, read on...

Now I request of everyone recieveing this message to call the Provost's office and tell the secretary that you as a Mac user are upset and outraged at the new Napster contract and demand a solution for Mac users.

Hopefully, the deluge of similar calls will send a message to the Provost that he has made a mistake.

You can also mail Provost Phelps I cannot post phone numbers and email addresses here, but go to http://www.rochester.edu/FindPeople/ and search for "Charles Phelps".

PLEASE take action.

Forward this message to anyone you know in the Mac world who would like to voice their opion of disappointment with the actions of the Provost. This was a purely discriminatory act AGAINST Mac users. We will not stand for it. We will be heard.

wouldn't this best be dealt with... on U of Rochester's campus?

Seeing as how I don't even go to school in the same state, I fail to see how the school's administration will give two shits about what I think.

Any Mac/iTunes using students on that campus would have a legitimate complaint, especially Mac users. However, the weight of any words I would have is severely hindered by the lack of alumnus status or a tuition paying student's voice behind it.

I'm sorry to hear Napster successfully marketed itself to the school at the expense of Mac using students. However, not being affected by the administration's decision, nor the administration of U of Rochester, in any way shape or form, being affected by my opinion, I don't see what help my voice would be to your terrible plight.

Take the issue to the school paper(s). Take the issue to whatever student government or advocacy avenues you have. Failing that, get a Windows using friends and get some free tunes burned to a CD... oh, wait.. "Permanent downloads—to burn to CDs or transfer to any of 60 portable music devices—can be purchased for 99 cents each or $9.95 for an album."

It's not that great of a deal, and students will be pissed when their tracks can't transfer to an MP3 player or CD, or even play on their PC after a period of time, without paying anyway. Take that bit of info to your school paper(s). You'll get farther than you ever will here.

And why can't they purchase their iTunes music themselves? I don't see why it should be the University's responsibility to provide music to students.
