Do yourselves a favor and order your photos from www.ofoto.com. Apple does.

We ordered some photos using iPhoto through Apple and on the back of the photos it says "printed by ofoto"

I guess I don't really have a problem with it except that Apple charges .39 and ofoto charges .29 per 4x6.

Think we have any recourse? To me this a little misleading.

When you buy a computer from Apple... they don't make it!!!!!!!! When you buy food from Giant... they don't bake it!!!! etc. etc. etc.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but did you honestly thing Apple had printers printing photos?

Give me a break people.

Ofoto, Kodak, whatever. The point is that Apple uses this company to print photos. I'm letting people know to save money by going straight to ofoto.

don't you think people that will print a lot of photos like that will actually buy their own printer?

give the guy a break.
he was just trying to save people some money.
no its not a big conspiracy that apple uses someone else. as someone said its not like apple built a photo lab or anything.
this is very common practice.
but, had you investigated this service appears to be windows only...at least their uploader software is. i dont know if they support web uploads or not since im not going to join.
yes, apple does overprice on prints. ive said that since say one. but its not THAT outrageous. i can always take stuff to walmart for like 24 cents a print. this place charges out the wazoo for shipping. does apple charge shipping?

k...didnt know if they charged shipping or not. ive never ordered any. i either take my pics to walmart or print them myself.
yes, there are some "unique" people in these type of forums. its not limited to macnn i assure you. in fact macnn is one of the more normal places ive found.
i think its more of the tone that you took. BUYERS BEWARE!!!! and also a kind of "conspiracy-like" tone to your posts.
i am sure if apple could charge less they would. but they too have to make a profit on this. remember everything is cheaper at the source.

I ordered prints once.. it came back inside an Apple-logo envelope.

I assume you that used iPhoto to order prints, Apple made it easier for consumers/Mac users... I doubt that ordering prints from Ofoto is easier or about the same.

If you don't like it.. get yourself a real photo printer.

The point is I think that one would expect that Apple makes a deal with them to get cheaper prices for the prints in return for the mass of customers they bring, and that apple would value its own loyal customers enough to share that saving with them instead of making it look like a rip-off.

WHOA! Easy everyone... no need to call names.

I see the original poster's point. But at the same time I see the flip-side.

I think the responses are mostly saying: "Yes, we KNOW it's gonna cost a bit more to get photos through iPhoto, but the trade-off is convenience and the experience."

Its literally a one-click process through iPhoto and you never have to leave the comfort of the user interface. It does all the billing and uploading of images for you. That's worth 'something', isn't it...?

Basically, Apple is charging for the "Experience" and ease of use. You've always (well, not ALWAYS) but for a WHILE, you've had the options of going numerous other places online to get your digital photos output to prints. No secret there. But not a lot of us did it. It was never convenient or in the forefront of my mind. UNTIL... along came iPhoto.

The very application that manages my photos allows me to EASILY get them sent to me as prints.

So... it's eiither I save 10¢ per print... but never get around to printing them (hence the savings are lost)... or I go with the flow and when the mood sstrikes me, I can easily get the prints I want in just a mere click or two.

Apple has to pay for THEIR overhead costs too. They pay their money to Kodak, but they also pay for packaging, development (software), marketing, etc.

So... YES... you can shop around and pay less... or you can accept that we all KNOW that Apple uses an outside source for most of their goods, they just repackage it and brand it to their liking and accept the price differential.

Peace.

Nice printers are for suckers... $150 for the printer... $60 for new ink...

I just walk in to my local CVS and print them out there for 23¢ per print. The quality is much better then a printer, and it's instant.

That being said, I can understand why people use iPhoto. You click one button (enter some credit card info) and you are done... It's still cheaper then having them developed the old way.

I ordered a few 8x10's from iPhoto, and the mailman crammed them into my small mailbox folding them in half. I called Apple, and they sent new ones out that day.

I wonder if service could be a difference? I've never used oPhoto, so I don't know.

So Apple charges .10¢ per photo more then ofoto.com? Seems like a fair rate per photo as Apple takes care of everything with one click. I don't have to got o ofoto.com do the order manually and enter in all my info, etc. So, for the convenience and extra work involved, it's seems fair to me.

10 cents for the one-click ease - ANY DAY.

Yeah, if you're ordering LOTS of photos, it may be worth it for you to find cheaper 'per picture' alternatives - in which case ofoto isn't the cheapest either.

I do agree that ofoto does a quality job, but with how few prints I actually order (mostly for my grandmother who doesn't use a computer), the extra 10 cents is easily worth the one-click ease within iPhoto. Easily.

I have all of my pictures developed at Sam's Club. $0.20 per picture and they are done by the time I am done with the weekly shopping.

Just take the memory card in loaded with pictures, pop it into the kiosk, select "print all", shop for food and diapers, pick up pictures and check out.

I send my pictures to a new service called mofo-to. It is run by comrade that works for Kodak in the Ofoto division and he prints them up confiscated capitalist-imperialist paper during lulls in production runs. He charges twice as much as iPhoto, but at least I'm getting them from the source. Oh, and I have to manually encode the images into binhex on a rusty underwood typwriter mail them. Well, send them by truck, actually. Those 5 Megapixel images can really add up. Even though it is more expensive I am confident that he is losing money, so it is worth it.

He does not do email since he knows they're watching.

Not it's not, you missed the point...

Printer: $150
Ink: $60

Notice how much the ink costs compared to the printer, you could almost by a new printer for the cost of the ink. Get it?
